Yoga is a system of self-improvement and spiritual growth, developed in India over 2000 years ago. There are many branches of yoga. Hatha yoga, or the physical postures (asanas) of yoga, is the most widely known. Indian monks found that their physical bodies interfered with their spiritual practice and meditation. It’s hard to focus if your body aches! So, in an effort to advance their spiritual sides, the monks developed a series of asanas to help transcend the physical and concentrate on the spiritual. With continued practice, what once seemed purely physical slowly transforms the practitioner towards a metaphysical state of being.
Today, and especially in western culture, yoga is primarily practiced for the many physical benefits. A regular yoga practice improves strength, balance and flexibility (daily practice is wonderful, but two-to-three days a week is also great). It helps regulate metabolism and hormones, reduces stress, and improves circulation.
Practicing yoga in a hot environment opens both the chakras and the musculoskeletal system, helps eliminate toxins and rebuilds the body from old injuries.
